최명진, 임일민 작가의 2인전 ‘FACE to FACE’는 ‘직접 만나다.’ ‘서로 얼굴을 맞대다.’ ‘대면하다.’라는 의미를 가지고 있는 타이틀로 인물 형상을 변화시킨 두 작가의 작품들이 전시장에서 먼저 서로 대면하게 되고, 관람객 또한 작품 속 인물들과 마주하며 작가가 던지는 내면의 메시지를 직접 느껴보고, 나아가 자신의 마음 속 상처를 치유하는 시간을 가져볼 수 있도록 기획된 전시이다. 이번 전시는 키다리 갤러리의 대표 전속작가인 최명진 작가와 임일민 작가가 참여하는 2인전으로 진행되는데, 최명진 작가와 임일민 작가는 모두 키다리 갤러리가 신진 작가 발굴을 위해 개최하는 공모전인 키똑전(키다리 갤러리 신진작가 공모전 똑.똑.똑) 제5회와 제7회 행사에서 각각 최우수 작가로 선정되었던 작가라는 공통점이 있다. 이후 키다리 갤러리 전속작가로 소속되어 활발한 전시활동과 함께 키아프, 화랑미술제, 아트부산, 어포더블아트페어 싱가포르 같은 국내외 주요 아트페어에 참가하며 미술 애호가들에게 크게 주목받고 있는 20대 이머징 아티스트이다.

최명진 작가는 관계 속 위로와 치유를 주제로 한 회화 작업을 꾸준히 이어오고 있다. 자유롭게 변형시킨 인간의 형태를 통해 인간의 심리를 무채색과 단색 위주의 색감을 사용하여 상처받은 인간들의 감정을 캔버스에 담아낸다. 작품 속 굵은 직선과 색감은 때로는 차갑고 거칠게 다가오지만, 그 안에 내포된 따뜻한 의미와 감성은 관람객에게 깊은 위안과 치유의 힘을 전달한다. 최명진 작가는 최근 자신의 대표 시리즈 작품이였던 ‘best hugger’의 단순한 포옹을 넘어 자연 속에서 치유를 받는 시리즈로 자신의 작품 세계를 확장 시켜 나가고 있다. 현대인의 상처받은 마음을 치유하는 것은 가족, 연인, 친구의 따뜻한 포옹이기도 하지만 거대한 자연의 품속에서 받는 위로 또한 치유의 힘이 크다고 말해주고 있다. 작가는 전통적인 붓을 사용하는 대신 자신의 손을 도구로 사용하며 아크릴 물감을 캔버스에 찍고 펼치는 방식으로 인물의 표면을 만들어낸다. 이 독특한 방식의 작업은 시각적인 질감이 극대화 될 뿐만 아니라, 손끝에서 직접 전달되는 감정의 온도를 더욱 진하게 전달한다.

임일민 작가는 내면 깊숙이 자리잡은 유년기 시절의 상처와 표현되지 못한 감정들을 토해내어 캔버스에 옮겨 담는 작업을 선보인다. 부정적이거나 불안한 감정과 결핍이 모인 불완전한 인격체들을 작가 특유의 거친 드로잉과 감성이 개입된 인상적인 표정, 오묘한 색감의 조화로 인물을 그려내고 있다. 작가는 작품을 통해 인간이 어떠한 이유들로 비록 불완전한 인격체로 존재하는 삶을 살고 있다하여도, ‘나’라는 존재 자체만으로도 누구에게나 사랑받을 자격이 있다는 사실을 깨닫고 자신의 이야기를 담은 작품이 타인의 삶과도 연결 될 수 있고, 내면의 억눌린 감정이 다른 이와 만나 공감대를 형성하고, 그 교감 안에서 치유도 될 수 있음을 얘기해주고 있다. 특히 그의 화풍은 ‘에곤 실레’와 닮았다는 관람평들이 많지만, 작가는 동양적 재료를 기반으로 인물에 자신의 감성을 담아내는 실험적인 작업들을 통해서 자신만의 표현 기법으로 독창성을 보여주고 있다.

이번 전시에는 최명진, 임일민 작가의 최신 회화 작품 17점이 전시 된다.

The two-person exhibition “FACE to FACE” by artists Choi Myeong-jin and Lim Il-min takes its title from the phrase “to meet in person.” The title conveys the meanings of “to face each other” and “to meet face-to-face.” In this exhibition, the works of the two artists—who have transformed human figures—first “face” each other within the gallery space. Visitors, in turn, are invited to encounter the figures in the artworks, directly experience the inner messages conveyed by the artists, and take time to heal the wounds within their own hearts. This exhibition is a two-person show featuring Choi Myeong-jin and Lim Il-min, both exclusive artists at KIDARI GALLERY. They share the distinction of having been selected as the top artists at the 5th and 7th editions, respectively, of the “KIDARI GALLERY Emerging Artist Competition (Ddok.Ddok.Ddok),” an open call held by KIDARI GALLERY to discover emerging talent. Since then, as exclusive artists at KIDARI GALLERY, they have been actively exhibiting and participating in major domestic and international art fairs such as KIAF, the Hwarang Art Festival, Art Busan, and the Affordable Art Fair Singapore, garnering significant attention from art enthusiasts as emerging artists in their 20s.

Artist Choi Myeong-jin has consistently pursued a body of work centered on the themes of comfort and healing within relationships. Through freely transformed human forms and a color palette dominated by achromatic and monochromatic tones, she captures the emotions of wounded individuals on canvas. While the bold straight lines and color palette in her works may at times appear cold and rough, the warm meaning and sensitivity embedded within them convey a profound sense of comfort and healing to viewers. Artist Choi Myeong-jin has recently expanded her artistic universe beyond the simple embrace of her signature “est Hugger” series to a new series exploring healing found in nature. She conveys that while the warm embraces of family, partners, and friends can heal the wounded hearts of modern people, the comfort received in the embrace of nature’s vastness also holds immense healing power. Instead of using a traditional brush, the artist employs her hands as tools, creating the surface of her figures by dabbing and spreading acrylic paint onto the canvas. This unique technique not only maximizes visual texture but also conveys the emotional warmth transmitted directly from her fingertips with even greater intensity.

Artist Lim Il-min presents works that pour out the wounds of childhood and unexpressed emotions deeply rooted within him, transferring them onto the canvas. He portrays figures—imperfect beings shaped by negative or anxious emotions and feelings of deprivation—through his signature rough drawings, expressive facial expressions infused with emotion, and a harmonious blend of subtle colors. Through his work, the artist conveys the message that even though humans may live as imperfect beings for various reasons, the very existence of “I” alone makes everyone worthy of love. He suggests that works containing his personal story can connect with the lives of others, that suppressed inner emotions can meet those of others to form a bond of empathy, and that healing can occur within that communion. While many viewers note that his style resembles that of Egon Schiele, the artist demonstrates his originality through his own unique expressive techniques, using experimental works that infuse his sensibilities into the figures while drawing on Eastern materials.
